Universities in Coimbatore and what they ask for

Bharathiar University
Most scholars in arts, science, commerce and management around Coimbatore register with Bharathiar, either in a university department or in a research centre at an affiliated college. As per the 2025–26 PhD regulations, the thesis can have 275 A4 pages at the maximum. Bibliography, tables and diagrams are not counted in this 275, and the university gives no exemption from the limit. For binding also they have a rule, hard binding is not allowed, so go for a thin flexible cover when you give it to the binder.
Anna University, through Coimbatore research centres
Engineering scholars in GCT, PSG Tech, CIT, Kumaraguru, Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College and many other colleges do their research at centres that appear in the Centre for Research list of approved institutions. The degree is given by Anna University, so the R2025 regulations from Chennai apply to them. Whatever their own college follows in house, that does not change the position.
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU)
For doctoral programmes TNAU has its own PG Rules and Regulations 2025, published by the School of Post Graduate Studies. Out of 100 total credits in the doctoral programme, thesis research carries 75 credits. For evaluation the thesis is sent to the Dean (SPGS) in paper pack, and you have to enclose a plagiarism certificate and a reference management certificate with it.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham
Amrita’s 2024 PhD policy links your progress with manuscripts. Before Open Seminar I, a second manuscript should already be in accepted status, and before Open Seminar II you need a third one accepted. After the second seminar you get 40 days to give the synopsis, which is around 12 pages. It is sent to two external examiners, and at least one of them will be from abroad.
Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences
Karunya allows similarity up to 20% as per the 2023 regulations, and the scholar’s own published work is left out of that figure. A senior teacher, chosen by the head of the department, checks the layout before you submit. Six months is the time you get for the thesis, counted from the day Doctoral Committee approves your synopsis.

Three different similarity limits in one city

Many scholars are thinking the similarity limit is 10% in every university, but in Coimbatore it changes from one university to the next.

Bharathiar University keeps the limit at 10%, and the check is done on DrillBit. Its plagiarism check page and the certificate have two points that people mostly miss. Only the chapters are checked, and the front pages and references are not sent for the check. Also the signed certificate is valid for 15 days only, so plan the check near to your submission date.

Karunya allows 20%, as we said above. The TNAU 2025 rulebook, in section 28.6, accepts a thesis for submission only when the similarity is below 30%, and that check is done on the software in the Dean (SPGS) office. For Anna University, 10% is the limit with no penalty, as per the levels given in its own regulations.

This matters for you because a figure that passes at TNAU can stop a Bharathiar thesis completely. When we read your similarity report, we compare it with your own university’s limit only. Suppose the university changed the certificate form or moved to some other software after we checked, then the research section notice is final. Go by their notice and not by our page.

Papers you need before the thesis goes in

Many times the publications take longer than the writing, and in Coimbatore they decide when you can submit.

Bharathiar University wants two published papers before the thesis can be submitted. For arts, humanities, social science and language theses, the journals should be SSCI, AHCI, Scopus or peer-reviewed. For science theses they should be SCI, SCIE, Scopus or refereed. Apart from this you must present two papers in a conference or seminar, and a paper which is printed only in proceedings will not be counted. At the time of filing the synopsis, attach the Certificate of Genuineness of Research Publication along with first page of the paper. If these are missing, the synopsis is refused.

Anna University wants at least one paper published after you joined the programme, in a journal from the Centre for Research list. Only then it accepts your synopsis. You must be the first author on that paper, or the second author if your supervisor’s name is first. Later, up to five of your papers are bound into the thesis.

Karunya asks for two papers published or accepted in Scopus or Web of Science indexed journals. Amrita counts accepted manuscripts at each stage, as mentioned earlier. If your paper is still under review, fix the synopsis date keeping the journal’s timeline in mind, because finishing your writing fast will not help when the journal is slow.

The Bharathiar synopsis and submission, step by step

Most of Coimbatore scholars are with Bharathiar, so we are giving its paperwork separately here.

The synopsis should be 6 to 10 pages, in 12-point Times New Roman, printed on one side of A4 sheets. You can file it three months before your minimum period is over, and this gives the university time to get consent from the examiners. In the research section’s synopsis checklist they have written four soft-bound copies. For a Tamil thesis it is six copies. Along with that you pay a ₹6,000 fee and attach both Doctoral Committee meeting reports. Your supervisor gives the list of examiners in a sealed envelope. One confusion is there. In the regulations it is still six copies only, so better you ask the Centre for Research and Evaluation on the day itself how many they are taking now.

Before submission there is a pre-PhD presentation in your own department. Any teacher or research scholar can attend, and you have to add their comments into the draft. After that the Doctoral Committee certifies the quality of your research and of your papers. Without that signature the university will not process the thesis.

From the synopsis date you get six months to submit the thesis. Getting late beyond that will cost you. As per the online submission instructions there is ₹500 penalty for every extra six months you take. The same sheet lists what to upload, that is the thesis file below 10 MB, the thesis and declaration certificates, the publication certificate, a CD with the PDF and the receipt for the ₹18,000 fee. Tamil medium thesis is allowed. Only thing, an English translation has to be attached along with the Tamil one. And the thesis title has to be exactly same as the synopsis title, word to word.

My college is in Coimbatore but my degree is from Anna University. Which format do I follow?

You have to go with the Anna University format, since the degree comes from them. The Centre for Research template and the R2025 regulations apply at all approved centres. Your college may add some review steps of its own, but it has no power to change the thesis format.

Is the 275-page limit at Bharathiar really strict?

Yes, they are quite serious about this limit. The regulations clearly say that no exemption will be given. Bibliography, tables and diagrams are outside the count, and you can add your published papers or manuscripts also. Still the main text has to come within the limit.

My Bharathiar similarity report shows 14%. What now?

Bharathiar University’s limit is 10%, so with 14% the certificate will not be issued. First see what the report is matching. In many reports we see, the match comes from quotes where the quotation marks got missed. Or a definition is taken straight from some textbook and the citation is not given. Your own published paper also gets matched many times. We go through the report with you on a call and mark which parts need proper citation and which parts need rewriting in your own words. The rewriting you will do yourself.
