Thesis template builder
Pick your university and get a Word file set to its layout.
Choose your university from the menu and this page will make a Word file with its thesis layout already set, ready for writing. Page size, margins, font, line spacing, heading styles and page numbers are all set inside the file.
Right now nine universities are in the list. They are from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, for example Anna University, Bharathiar, the University of Madras, VTU and JNTU Hyderabad. Once you select one, a small box under the menu shows the font, spacing and margins the file will use. It also tells which values your university really prescribed and which ones we filled because the regulations are silent.

How the tool works
For every university in the menu we keep a short record in our format data. Each record is made from that university’s own thesis regulations, which we read in September 2026. The record has the font and font size, the line spacing, all four margins in millimetres, sizes for three levels of heading, and the order of the pages that come before Chapter 1. Some universities give a range and not one fixed number. In that case the template takes the lower value. Anna University is a good example for this. As per its R2025 regulations the top margin can be 30 to 35 mm and the left margin 35 to 40 mm, so in the template you get 30 mm at the top and 35 mm on the left. Anna body text is Times New Roman 13 point, and the lines are spaced 1.5 apart. Our Anna University format guide has the other Anna rules.
The Word file is made by your own browser, on your computer only. When you click the button, the browser loads a small open-source library called docx from cdn.jsdelivr.net to write the file. We are not sending anything to our server.
These things are there in the Word file.
- A4 page size with your university’s margins. The body font is already saved as the Normal style.
- Styles for Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3. Chapter headings come in the centre, and the section headings under them stay on the left side.
- Front pages like certificates, declaration, abstract and acknowledgement in the order your university follows. On top of every such page you will see a grey note in square brackets, and it says if your university asks for that page or you can leave it.
- Page numbers in small Roman (i, ii, iii) for the front pages. From Chapter 1 the numbering starts again at 1, in Arabic numbers.
- A table of contents which picks up your headings. After adding the chapters, right-click on it and choose Update Field.
- Five empty chapter shells and the end sections. In the last page there is a note about the template itself, and you should delete that page before you submit.
Sometimes a university does not fix the font, spacing or margin. Then the template goes with what most Indian universities follow, which is Times New Roman 12, 1.5 spacing, 1.5 inches on the left and one inch on the other three sides. Whenever this happens the summary box show it clearly. The last page of the Word file mentions it also, so you can check it with your guide.
Questions scholars ask
My university isn’t in the list. Can I still use this?
Yes, you can use it as a starting point. Download the file of a university whose layout is close to yours. Then change three things in Word. First the margins under Layout, then the font and size in the Normal style, and last the spacing in the Paragraph box. Take the numbers from your own regulations only, whatever the template has. Our $checklist has the other points to compare.
Will the file work in Google Docs or LibreOffice?
Both will open it, because it is a normal .docx file. The heading styles also come through. The table of contents is a Word field, and mostly it updates properly in Microsoft Word only. If you are writing in Google Docs, insert a new table of contents there after your chapters are ready.
I already have chapters in another file. How do I move them in?
Copy one chapter and paste it into the template using “Keep Text Only”. When you paste like that, Word drops the fonts and spacing from your old file and the text takes the template’s own styles. After that, mark your headings again with Heading 1, 2 and 3. It is slow for a long thesis, but without this step the contents page and the page numbering will not behave properly.
Why do the front pages use Roman numbers?
In most Indian universities the pages before Chapter 1 are numbered i, ii, iii, and Arabic numbering starts from the first chapter. For this the template has two sections. If your university wants one numbering from start to end, delete the section break before Chapter 1 and change the number format in the footer.
Can I build the template on my phone?
Yes, the button works in a current phone browser and the file downloads normally. But on a small phone screen you cannot properly see if the margins and styles came correct. Before you write any serious chapter in it, open the file on a laptop and check the margins and font once.
