Plagiarism check and reduction

A similarity report you understand, and a lower score you earned.

Yes, we can go through your similarity report with you and bring the score down honestly, by citing, quoting and rewriting in your own words.

Mostly the report comes from the library as a PDF. On top there is one big number, say 27%, and your university wants 10%. Many scholars get tensed and start changing words here and there without a plan. It rarely works. Many times the sentences only get worse.

Please don’t look only at the percentage. Look at the list of sources below it and the coloured passages in the text. When you know which passage is matching with which source, and why it is matching, deciding the fix is not difficult. We are going through the report source by source and putting each match into a group. After that we sit with you on calls and take the matches one by one. The sources giving the biggest share of the score come first.

Who this suits

  • The library check came above your university’s limit and the submission date cannot be moved.
  • You want to check the thesis yourself before the official check, since those attempts are limited or paid. JNTUH gives three chances. At the University of Kerala you pay by challan for each library check.
  • Your literature review chapter is showing lot of matches. You are not sure which ones are a real problem and which are only standard terms of the subject.
  • Your own published papers are coming as matches, and you don’t know what your university says about that.

What you get

A reading of your report

Each match in the similarity report goes into one of four groups. Some are quoted and cited properly. Some are cited but the wording is too near to the source. Some have no citation at all. The rest are harmless, like standard terms, method names or your own earlier papers. Work is needed only for the second and third groups.

A list of what to fix, page by page

You get a table with every passage that needs work. For each one it gives the page number, the source it matches and what fix to do. Tick each row when you finish it.

Citation and quotation repairs

We add the missing citations, but only from sources you really used. Short definitions copied word for word go inside quotation marks with the page number. Many times these small repairs bring the score down quickest.

Rewriting with you, in your words

Some passages are written too close to the source. We take those up with you on a call. You explain the idea and we help you write it in your words. The new text belong to you, and you can defend it in the viva.

Advice on the checker’s settings

We check whether the bibliography, quotations and small matches were excluded when the library ran the report. If they were not excluded, we tell you what to ask the library.

A note for your supervisor

If your guide wants it, we give a short note listing what was changed and the reason. Your supervisor signs the originality certificate, so they should see this.

How the work runs

  1. Send the full report

Send the complete similarity report only, not the summary page. Without the source list and the highlighted text we cannot do much. Also tell us your university name and the allowed limit.

  2. Check the settings first

We don’t touch the text till we see if the reference list, quotations and small matches were excluded. Many times the library forgets one of these settings, and then your percentage shows much more than what is actually copied.

  3. Sort every match

Every match goes into one of the four groups and you receive the fix list. From this you will know how much of the score is real and how much is only noise.

  4. Fix, with you

We do the citations and quotation marks first. After that come the rewriting calls with you. The chapter with the highest score is taken first and the lowest one last.

  5. Run the check again

The corrected thesis goes back to your library’s software. If some passages are still matching, we look at that new report together and do the corrections.

How long it takes

WorkTypical timeDepends on
Reading a similarity report and making the fix list2 to 3 working daysHow long the report is and how many sources it lists
Citation and quotation repairs across a thesis3 to 5 working daysHow many sources are not there in the reference list
Rewriting sessions for one heavily matched chapter1 to 2 weeksHow much of the chapter is matching, and when you are free for calls
A full thesis from about 30% down toward 10%2 to 4 weeksWhere the matches are, and how many need rewriting and not only a citation

Rewriting cannot be hurried much. It needs your time as much as ours. If your library gives only a few checks, keep them. Use the next check only after the fix list is complete and every passage in it is ticked.

What it costs

We charge as per the amount of text that really needs work. The big percentage on top does not decide the fee. Suppose the score is 30% only because the bibliography was not excluded. Then the job is small. If the same 30% comes from many paragraphs written too close to their sources, the job is big. We read the report first. Then we send you a written scope with a fee for each stage.

How we scope and quote

The quote depends on

  • How many passages need rewriting and not just a citation
  • Length of the thesis and how many chapters have matches
  • Sources that are missing from the reference list
  • Whether you want the reference list reformatted too
  • Your deadline, and how many check attempts are left

Questions scholars ask

What similarity percentage is allowed for a PhD thesis?

Most universities follow the levels in the UGC’s 2018 academic integrity regulations. Level 0 means 10% or less, and there is no penalty. Level 1 covers more than 10% and up to 40%. Here you submit a revised script within the time the university fixes, which is six months at most. Level 2 is above 40% and up to 60%. Here you wait one year before a revised script is accepted. Level 3 is anything above 60%, and the registration gets cancelled. A second offence moves you one level up. The 2018 regulations are on the UGC website.

Does my university use the same limit?

Many universities have their own figure, so you should check the rules of your university once. We looked at some of them in October 2026. For PhD, M.Phil. and M.Tech work, the University of Hyderabad keeps its limit at 10%. JNTUH allows up to 24% in total, and not more than 3% from any one source. KTU’s general guideline is 20%. For Karunya the figure is 20% too, and your own published works are kept out of that count. TNAU accepts below 30% for Master’s and doctoral theses. Osmania wants similarity within 10% and AI-generated content within 20%.

What doesn’t count towards the score?

As per clause 7 of the 2018 regulations, some parts are not counted. Quotations given with attribution are left out. The references and bibliography are also left out, and the contents page, preface and acknowledgements too. Equations, standard symbols, the generic terms of your field and the text of laws are not counted. Common or chance phrases up to 14 consecutive words are also excluded. Your abstract, hypotheses, results and conclusions are different. Those parts must be original.

Which software will my university use?

It differs from place to place. Since November 2023, INFLIBNET’s ShodhShuddhi programme has been giving DrillBit to universities. But its latest notice, dated 31 March 2026, extended the service for six months only, and we found no newer notice as of October 2026. Ask to your library what they are using now. Some universities buy Turnitin or iThenticate on their own. Anna University’s older policy still mentions Urkund. The same text can get different scores on each tool, because each one searches different databases.

My own published paper is matching. Is that plagiarism?

That depends on your university. In Anna University, the policy says the papers you have claimed in your thesis are excluded from the check. The University of Hyderabad ignores overlap with a paper in which you are the first author. At Bangalore University the supervisor gives a certificate naming exactly which papers can be excluded. Find out the rule for your own university. In any case, cite your papers in the chapters.

Can’t I just use a paraphrasing tool?

You can, but we advise you not to. Spun text loses the meaning and brings in mistakes that examiners will notice. AI detection may also flag it. Worse, the tool may change a technical claim. Then in the viva you will be defending a sentence you never wrote and don’t fully understand.

Can you run the official check for me?

We can’t do that one. Your university does the official check itself on its approved software, and your undertaking and your supervisor’s certificate go along with it. Any check we run outside will not be accepted by them. We work from the report your library gives you.

Is a Master’s dissertation held to the same rules?

Yes, unless your university fixes its own figure. The 2018 regulations are written for dissertations as well as theses, and the levels for a dissertation are same as for a PhD. PG students don’t get ShodhShuddhi accounts. So a Master’s check is done on the college’s or university’s own tool.
